Introduce yourself.
My name is GholamReza Sharifi, aged 47. I am a proud father of one daughter and three sons. From 1994 to 2005, I held the esteemed title of a seven-time Taekwondo champion in the UAE, based in Dubai. Additionally, I represented the UAE in Taekwondo as an Olympic athlete in the 85+ category in 2004. Beyond my athletic achievements, I am an entrepreneur involved in martial arts facility services, wellness promotion, health events, and martial arts equipment. I had the honor of serving as the late Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum's royal family trainer and later as the Taekwondo coach for His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's martial arts dojo from 2013 to 2019. Furthermore, I engage in the Korean luxury art business as an art gallerizer and dealer, and my family practices natural therapy.
When did you start Taekwondo and what motivated you to start?
I began my Taekwondo journey in 1988 after encountering a distressing incident where I was assaulted by two older boys on my way to school. This experience ignited my motivation to learn self-defense, leading me to start practicing Taekwondo and kung-fu in 1989.
Please share the emotions and feelings of winning twice at the Taekwondo Olympiad.
Competing in Taekwondo for the first time was a challenge, as I struggled to find the right training regimen. Under the guidance of three different masters in Taekwondo, Muay Thai, and kung-fu, I prepared diligently. The exhilaration of defeating my senior instructor in my debut competition was unparalleled. Winning my second competition, however, was the toughest battle of my life. Facing eight formidable opponents from the UAE team in 1995 left me bruised but triumphant. Despite the physical toll, the victory solidified my reputation as a respected Taekwondo fighter in the UAE. While my journey comprised victories and defeats, each experience fueled my determination to excel. My disappointment in a controversial loss during my early days spurred me to delve into sports science, enhancing my preparation and resilience. Today, I am grateful for the lessons learned and the opportunity to mentor others, emphasizing the importance of embracing challenges and continuous self-improvement.
As the interest in Korean culture has increased through Taekwondo, what motivated your interest in Korean culture?
My fascination with Korean culture stems from various aspects, including the wisdom of Sejong the Great and the discipline, unity, and equality embodied by the Korean people. Additionally, my immersion in Korean martial arts introduced me to the rich cultural heritage of Korea. From art to traditions, Korean culture resonates deeply with me, inspiring my personal and professional endeavors.
If you visit Korea again, where do you want to visit the most and what would you like to do?
Upon returning to Korea, I aspire to explore every corner of this captivating country, immersing myself in its rich history and vibrant culture. Whether it's visiting historical landmarks, indulging in traditional cuisine, or experiencing contemporary Korean life, I eagerly anticipate embracing all that Korea has to offer.
If UAE University were to promote Korean cultural events for young people, what event would you most like to host?
As an advocate for Taekwondo and martial arts, I would be honored to host a Taekwondo event aimed at promoting physical fitness, discipline, and cultural exchange among young individuals. Additionally, incorporating elements of Korean fashion, art, education, and family traditions would enrich the experience, fostering a deeper appreciation for Korean culture.
If you have any questions or require assistance in beginning your Taekwondo or martial arts journey, I am readily available to offer guidance and support.
